Obviously there is a chance for me to see all of my fellow volunteers who have become some of my best friends despite only seeing them once or twice a year. If it weren’t for Nationals, Improv Camp/University and various improv festivals around the country, I would have never met the inspiring and committed Cari Leslie or the hilarious and brilliant Mike Fardy. I would have never gotten to see Justin Collette develop into one of the most interesting and fun improvisers to play with, to name just a few.

There are the great moments on stage, seeing teams and styles of improv I would never get a chance to see at home on the West Coast. This year I saw beautiful clown work and attack from Toronto’s Milton. Ottawa’s All Saints once again demonstrated commitment and transformation into ridiculous fully realized characters. Winnipeg’s Kelvin had such a charming, endearing, playful way of attacking the events. St. Thomas from Montreal’s characters come to life on their faces, reflecting the influence of the regions talented head trainer, Kirsten Rasmussen. Edmonton’s Picard is a team of diverse styles who all bring something different to the whole. Kingston’s Regi is full of strong leaders and performers. Ottawa’s Canterbury plays with an intensity that shows why they’re at Nationals again and again. I saw the return of Sudbury’s Bracebridge, so down to earth and supportive of one another. There was Regina’s Campbell, a team that plays with such abandon and has so much fun on stage. The play of Toronto’s MM Robinson shows the hard work, teamwork and love of the games that they have in abundance. Ottawa’s Lisgar is consistently a team that plays with honesty and draws you in to the world of the characters. Toronto’s Carter are such strong performers and artists, with a professional and polished style. Halifax’s Dartmouth showed such great physical work and were so dynamic on stage. St. John’s’ Queen Elizabeth is a team that showed great listening and had a calm, focused presence on stage. The Tri-Cities’ Preston showed us how attention to detail can lead to brilliant moments on stage. Moncton’s Riverview is always a joy and they had a great ability to listen and call back moments for hilarious results.

I got to see teams I’ve seen all year take to the stage at Nationals and bring it. Vancouver Island’s Vic High has an ability to dissect a suggestion and use it in such interesting ways. When you watch GISS play, you see the personality of the team and the uniqueness of the Gulf Islands on stage. Vancouver’s Kitsilano is like watching a fireball on stage and their characters are so rich. Templeton from East Vancouver has taken to the games so well and shows such a great understanding of the techniques we teach.

For me, though, the most compelling reason to return to Nationals and Improv Camp year after year, are the everyday interactions I have with the students and coaches. Seeing students brighten up from having one of us simply remembering their name or something we spoke about earlier, hearing how your workshops have influenced them to keep playing and try new things, driving teams from the airport and finding out we share a taste in music, hearing their plans for the future and how they want to keep improv in their lives, are some of the moments that make Nationals magical.

Thank you to the students, coaches and fellow volunteers that keep this monster alive. Nothing like this exists anywhere in the world and it says something about those involved that we’ve managed to make it what it is today, kept it fresh and exciting for generations of improvisers before, and will continue to innovate and grow for generations to come!

Tonight is the finals and I can’t wait to see what the teams will bring, but I’m mostly looking forward to talking to the students and coaches after the show and sharing those moments that truly make up the Games.

Hailing from Danger Swamp, the Queen Elizabeth improv team is both honoured and excited to be competing here in Ottawa after 14 years under the oppressive rule of Dr. Dressup, emperor of Danger Swamp. This lovely team enjoys bashing bee’s nests together, a bonding experience to create the perfect hive mind. Other activities this team enjoys are polo, water polo, Marco Polo and sampling non-alcoholic wines and cheese.

The Cardinal Carter Academy (aka Carter) Improv team is travelling to Ottawa for the second year in a row. This year the team welcomes two new sophomore students and two new seniors to the team. With our exciting new line-up we are ready to take Nationals by storm! We are all very thrilled to meet and compete with the other teams. If you are looking for us at anytime feel free to yell out YOLO and we will come to your rescue. We feed on cheese and crackers, chocolate and clementines. Bracebridge Electric Impulse is ecstatic to be representing the Sudbury region on the national stage for the third time in four years. Though the battles were long, they won out thanks to the love from their sister team Static Shock, who has joined them on this amazing journey, keeping them going every step of the way. The team insists that “Will Ferrell” IS in fact a viable character trait, and should be accepted as such.

Lisgar has been a regular team at Nationals for years since it was established in 1996. After not making the final round of the Connor’s Cup, Lisgar has clawed their way back up to the top by placing third at Regional Finals and are ready for Nationals! Their practice regime is made up of yoga, raiding the school prop closet, and sneaking around the school in pairs to put up CIG posters! After placing third at Ottawa Regionals this year, Lisgar is pumped to be returning to the NAC stage for another 16 minutes together.
