The following is an overview of the Canadian Improv Games program running from November 1st, 2021 to August 31st, 2022. Registration will run from October 8th, 2021 until January 14th, 2022- with most events happening between November 2021 and April 2022.
This year the CIG is happy to announce FOUR programs for the 2021/22 season!
Registration this year is based on a per/team payment system. The cost to register will be $225+HST per team. Your school may register as many teams as they like – junior or senior. Teams can be ADDED anytime before the registration deadline of January 14th, 2022 – once your invoice has been paid you may not change the number of teams registered.
This program is designed for schools that can meet safely in person and can attend in-person events outside of school such as All Teams, X-Rounds, and a Regional Tournament. This program is also built on the understanding that if a school qualifies for the National Festival they will be allowed to travel to Ottawa, Ontario in April of 2022 (should an in-person National Festival be possible)
The CIG is committed to getting back to in-person games where it can be done safely and effectively. Although we will not be able to offer in-person tournaments in locations where the regional guidelines do not allow for in-person events or in locations where we have less than 10 teams registered, the CIG is excited to be offering in-person programming again this year. We are anticipating in-person tournaments in all regions that allow for in-person events. We also have a dedicated Outreach officer who will be working diligently to reach out to schools in your region so that regions can run effectively and with high enrollment!
The following regional tournaments may host these in-person events as early as November 2021:

The CIG is thrilled to announce the Distance Program! This program is designed for schools outside of a 3-hour drive from a city where a regional tournament takes place. This program is open to ANY high school or middle school in Canada that meets this requirement. This program is also built on the understanding that if a school qualifies for the National Festival they may be allowed to travel to Ottawa, Ontario in April of 2022 (should an in-person National Festival be possible)
This tournament will mimic the tournament held last year for schools that can meet safely in-person but cannot attend an in-person regional or national tournament. This program is separate from the In-Person Regional Tournament and the Distance Tournament and these teams will only be judged against each other. There will be no regional separation and a Top-5 team finals will be broadcast on Youtube (just like the 2020/21 tournament). A link to the 2020/21 virtual finals can be found in your registration email.
This tournament will be open to teams that cannot meet in-person at all. This program is open to teams who can only meet on platforms such as Zoom, Google Meets, etc. This program is separate from the In-Person Regional Tournament and the Distance Tournament and these teams will only be judged against each other. There will be no regional separation and a Top-5 team finals will be broadcast on Youtube (just like the 2020/21 tournament). A link to the 2020/21 Zoom finals can be found in your registration email.
The CIG is thrilled to announce that plans are underway to host an in-person National Festival in Ottawa in April of 2022. There are still MANY considerations (such as regional travel restrictions, vaccination requirements, and hotel safety and cost) but we are hopeful for an in-person National Festival.
The Festival will consist of workshops, forums, demos, and tickets to the shows each evening. More information about the National Festival will be announced before the winter break.
National Tournament
As always, the National Festival runs alongside the National Tournament, hosted at the Bronson Centre and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Ontario.
This year the breakdown of the competing teams is as follows:
Vancouver Island – Top Team
Lower Mainland – Top Two Teams
Alberta – Top Team
Saskatchewan – Top Team
Manitoba – Top Team
Toronto – Top Two Teams
Tri-City – Top Team
Kingston – Top Team
Ottawa – Top Two Teams
Maritimes – Top Team
Newfoundland – Top Team
Distance Tournament – Top Team
This means there will be 15 competing teams (3 nights of play, 5 teams each night) and the top 5 will advance to finals on the fourth night. These numbers may change over the next few season (based on previous CIG rules for number of teams sent to Nationals)
The CIG In-Person 2021/22 Program (In Short)
Virtual Teacher Consultation Calls (October -December 2021)
In-Person All-Teams/X-Rounds (November 2021-January 2022)
In-Person Regional Tournament (February 2022)
In-Person National Festival and Tournament (March/April 2022)
This program is designed for schools that can meet safely in person and can attend in-person events outside of school such as All Teams, X-Rounds, and a Regional Tournament. This program is also built on the understanding that if a school qualifies for the National Festival they may be allowed to travel to Ottawa, Ontario in April of 2022. (Should such a festival be feasible and safe to run and provincial travel restrictions allow)
Regional Programs
Each team that registers is entitled to:
All-Teams and X-Rounds
As much as possible this year the all-teams event and x-rounds nights of play will be scheduled for the same day/weekend to reduce travel costs and potential infection.
The following regional tournaments may host these events as early as November 2021:

Regional tournaments
As of right now the following regions will have an in-person regional tournament:
As stated above ALL in-person programs are contingent on the number of teams registered. Fewer than 10 teams registered in a program by January 14, 2022 will result in the cancellation of all in-person programs and the teams registered will be entered into the Distance Tournament instead. We are anticipating in-person tournaments in all regions that allow for in-person events. We are confident that our dedicated Outreach officer will support schools in your region so that regions can run effectively and with high enrollment!
Regional tournaments in each of these regions will take place in February of 2022. COVID protocols will be in effect based on individual health units protocols. Masks may be required to attend shows, venue capacities may be enforced, and social distancing may need to be maintained. See the CIG’s COVID Protocol Guide for full COVID protocols.
All other regional rules are in place as per the CIG Rulebook.

Registration
Registration for the 2021/22 season will run from October 1st 2021 until January 14th 2022, payment for schools is due ONE month after receiving an invoice. An electronic invoice will be sent to the email you provide and can be paid online. If your school does not allow for online payments, contact the CIG National Office ASAP at registration@improv.ca. Failure to pay this invoice within the given timeframe will result in a removal from the program.
The registration form will be checked daily and your registration package will be sent out within 48 hours of registering. Invoices will be sent out on Fridays.
Refund Policy
There are SO many ways you can engage with our program- and we have created four incredible tournaments that anyone can engage with- which means there will always be a way for your school to run a team!
Once an invoice has been paid, refunds will not be given except on a very specific case-by-case basis to be decided by the board of directors. Please consider your ability to run a team(s) before registering.
Switching between programs
Teams MAY switch between tournaments as restrictions change. The CIG reserves the right to switch teams should health requirements or enrollment be impossible in a region. If this occurs the CIG will work with schools individually to support a switch to a different program to be discussed with Program Manager Spencer Dunn. This will likely include a free workshop and an extra consultation call so that teams are supported in the switch.
For example: If a team is meeting in-person and is able to attend in-person events they will register for the In-Person Program – but if restrictions change that bar that team from being able to attend an in-person program they MAY switch over to the CIG Hybrid Tournament or CIG Online Tournament.
For a different example: A team has been meeting and rehearsing over Zoom- they are registered in the CIG Online Tournament. Then, restrictions are lifted and they are able to attend a regional tournament- they can then be switched over to the In-Person Program.
Should teams elect to switch programs they must do so by January 31, 2022.
Please remember this is NOT grounds for a refund or a reduction in cost, please take some time to consider which program will work best for you and your school.
Don’t be a silly goose. Sign up and stay in the know!
