The Organisation

The Canadian Improv Games (CIG), is a national charitable organisation dedicated to empowering youth across Canada by teaching them invaluable life skills like leadership, communication, commitment, positivity and teamwork through improvisational theatre and leadership education programs.

Founded in Ottawa in 1977, CIG is now home to the largest and most geographically dispersed youth theatre festival in Canada as well as 14 regional programs that welcome 5000+ participating students each year. CIG has also expanded to host a week-long summer camp program, Improvcamp, for young individuals who wish to grow and hone their skills outside of the high school environment. 

For 47 years, our programs have helped students build their confidence and leadership capacity, strengthen their critical-thinking skills, enhance their overall mental health, learn respect for others, improve their listening skills and develop life-long friendships with other participating students from across Canada.

More than just a high school theatre program, the Canadian Improv Games is a national community that spans generations and includes over 100,000 alumni, many of whom continue to enrich Canada’s cultural landscape today.  

Throughout the year, the Canadian Improv Games operates student programs in partnership with over 250 high schools across Canada. Each year, students between the ages of 13-18 can register for our programs through their high school and gain access to workshops, performance opportunities and training sessions as well as a chance to take part in a 4-day youth theatre festival in Ottawa each spring at the National Arts Centre (NAC).

Recognized by high school teachers and parents as a place that creates opportunities for students to develop and nurture the interpersonal skills required for success after high school, the Canadian Improv Games aims to help students explore their full potential and inspire success in a fun and nurturing environment.
